Just around the corner: Race Season 2011!

By admin, February 10, 2011

OK! We had our first taste of 40 degree temps in how many weeks? Whatever, it felt great, it felt like Spring, it felt like what we know is just around the corner, race season 2011. What better way to start off your season than with the first duathlon and triathlon on the East Coast. On the first day of Spring, Saturday, March 19th, in the heart of Brooklyn you and 300 other athletes will race in the 5th annual Prospect Park Spring Duathlon. This year the race provides three distances to choose from, Sprint, Classic, or International. So, if you’re a beginner the Sprint is perfect for you, if you’re a seasoned athlete but not quite ready for a long distance event the Classic is your distance, and then for those of you who dare to go long the International distance will prepare you for anything of length this season. Afterward, enjoy our famous oatmeal and good music as we celebrate the winners and the start of the 2011 season.

Now, on the first day of May, Sunday, you can take your first swim of the season and either go long or short at the 5th annual Bassman Triathlon. Only an hour from Philadelphia, 2 from NYC, and 3 from DC, Bass River State Forest is close to everything but seems like a place in the middle of nowhere. Come get lost with 400+ athletes in what has become the classic season opener on the East Coast by racing in the Sprint Distance or Half Distance event. As always, we’ll have great food and friendship throughout the awards ceremony and celebration of the 2011 kick off.

So, get in gear, run through the snow, deal with the cold weather, train, train, train, and sign up for these races as soon as you can for Spring is near and before you know it Winter will be long forgotten. Good Luck and Best Wishes, we look forward to seeing you at the races!

JOSE TORRES (Reston, Virginia)

First duathlon: 2010 Prospect Park Fall Duathlon
Training for:
2011 Prospect Park Spring Duathlon

On his last race: “I was so happy to finish [the Prospect Park Fall Duathlon], but transitioning from the bike to the final run was kind of cool. For me this was the first taste of competition since playing high school football 20 years ago.”

On training:”I train by myself and with a coach as a group. Twice a week I do train with a coach where we swim for an hour from 6-7am then run or bike or both from 7-8am. Three other days I exercise commuting to work. I run to work two days 7 miles and on the other day I ride round trip 14 miles. Then on the weekend I like to go for a long ride 90 minutes to an hour. In the spring I go on club bike rides. “

On his next race:”I participated in the 2010 fall duathlon with little training and a heavy hybrid bike. I’ve been running a lot more and have added a nice road bike to my tool box. I hope be just under 1:40 for the March 19 race. I’ll keep training. Hopefully it wont be 32 degrees.”
